Written materials can include, but are not limited to, a paper, checklists, precedents, or links to articles, as some examples. Materials should compliment your presentation and provide information and resources for attendees that can be referred to post-program.
For detailed instructions on preparing program materials, please refer to the Guidelines for Preparing Program Materials.
Our programs are paperless. Please keep in mind that registrants may not have printed materials in front of them to refer to while you are making your presentation.
CPD speakers are selected with reference to a number of factors, including one’s years of experience in practice, subject matter expertise, previous speaking experience, whether or not one can offer a unique perspective on a particular topic, etc. Note also that all prospective speakers who are also Ontario licensees are subject to a point-in-time review of their Law Society of Ontario regulatory history.
The LSO's new secure online communications system, LSO Connects is now live. For presenters who are LSO licensees, we strongly encourage you to ensure your contact information is kept up to date in LSO Connects.
In keeping with providing a safe environment for all staff and guests to the building, all persons accessing the Law Society of Ontario’s premises may be subject to a security screening. LSO licensees are reminded to have their Licensee ID/ID number with them at all times to avoid any delays on arrival for your program.
The Law Society of Ontario has a legal and ethical obligation to provide services that respect differences and are free of harassment and discrimination. When preparing your presentation and materials, we ask that you refrain from making inappropriate or offensive remarks that may be offensive or discriminatory to your colleagues and/or the audience.
CPD has been delivering programs that are webcast only.
If you have any special AV requirements, please reach out to your Program Coordinator to discuss if it is possible for us to accommodate them.
CPD is a self-funded program, maintained on a cost-recovery basis. Law Society fees are not used to fund CPD programming. For this reason, it is essential that presenter expenses for programs are strictly monitored and limited. All such expenses and travel plans must be approved by the Law Society in advance.
Please refer to our Expense Policy for Presenters and/or contact your Program Coordinator for further information.
For members of the Law Society, as a presenter you are entitled to enter into LSO Connects the amount of time you spent preparing for your presentation. Up to 6 CPD Hours may be claimed for teaching and up to 6 CPD Hours may be claimed for writing. Time spent teaching the same material more than once a year cannot be counted toward your annual CPD requirement. Actual teaching time will be multiplied by a factor of 3 to reflect preparation time. The content must be law-related and fall within the CPD definition.
Example: You agree to give a 30-minute presentation on a substantive topic at a 3-hour CPD program. You spend time preparing/creating speaking notes and slides to accompany your presentation. Before and after you give your presentation, you attend the program and listen to the other presenters. In this scenario, you are entitled to enter
Note: Law Society Members are required to complete a total of 3 Professionalism Hours on topics related to professional responsibility, ethics and/or practice management (including 1 Professionalism Hour that addresses issues of equality, diversity and inclusion) and 9 Substantive Hours per year.
